Spring Decluttering in 10 Days

Ready to dive into spring cleaning but feeling stuck on where to start? I have just the cure for you to get you motivated to get your house clean & decluttered in no time. I’ve provided you with one decluttering task to do each day for the next ten days. When you have less clutter inside your home you have less to clean and more space for living life. Anytime I declutter a space I instantly feel lighter and I hope this will help you feel the same.

Grab a notepad and make a list with three columns titled “restock”, “replace”, and “buy new”. As you are cleaning and decluttering your house make a note of anything that needs to be replaced, restocked, or something you need to add in and buy new. This will help your thoughts stay organized as you spend the next 10 days going through your items.

Before you begin, grab a big box or bag and write “donate” on it. As you declutter collect all items that need to be donated here so they are ready to be dropped off at the end of the 10 days.

Day One: Sunscreen

Whenever you are getting ready to tackle decluttering and cleaning I always recommend starting small. Completing one small task will help you feel confident and motivated to tackle the bigger ones. Let's get started! Gather all your sunscreen and check expiration dates. Any expired bottles can be rinsed out and recycled. Make a note of which ones need to be replaced.

Day Two: Fridge

I like to do a quick fridge clean-out once a week before I go grocery shopping but every few months it needs a deep clean. Take out everything in your fridge and toss anything that has expired. Take out shelves and drawers and scrub them in the sink. While the shelves and drawers are drying, sort all your fridge items, put like with like.

Day Three: Tupperware

First things first, check to make sure every piece of tupperware has a matching well fitting lid. Any mismatched tupperwares with no matches need to go. Once you have all your matches, decide how many you really need for your family and lifestyle. Anyone tupperware items you haven’t used in the last 6 months can be donated.

Day Four: Bags

Paper bags, plastic bags, reusable bags, purses, pouches, wallets, and duffle bags. If any of these categories are totally overflowing, make choices about what can be let go of. You don’t need three bags full of reusable bags, try limiting it down to ten or less. If you never use plastic bags, consider recycling them the next time you're at the grocery store. If you have any purses, wallets, totes, or duffle bags that you don’t love, use or need throw those in the donate bin.

Day Five: Books

Every time I read a book, I love to pass it along to a friend. There's no need to keep all the books I've already read. Take a quick scan through your books, which ones can be passed along and which ones can be donated or sold. This includes your kids books too, less is more. Anytime I have less books out for my kids they tend to read them more. I like to keep a bin of books in their closets and rotate them by color every month.

Day Six: Towels

Bath towels, beach towels, kitchen towels, and cleaning towels. Throw away any cleaning rags or towels that are falling apart or stained. Decide how many bath towels & beach towels your family needs. I like to have two of each towel for each person in our home. Any towels that are in okay shape can replace your old cleaning towels.

Day Seven: Accessories

First, start with your winter accessories like hats, gloves, scarves, and ski accessories. Gather them all up and determine which ones you wore last season, anything you didn’t wear goes into the donation box. If anything needs replacing add that to your list so you will know what to get in time for fall. Now do the same with all your summer accessories.

Day Eight: Medicine

Take inventory of your medicine cabinet. Throw out anything that has expired and make a note about what needs to be replaced. Take all new medicine out of packing so it’s ready to use & takes up less space.

Day Nine: Decor

Take a few minutes to walk around each room of your house. If any of the rooms feel too cluttered for your liking, determine if there are any decor items that can go. The decor items in your home should be things you love and that bring you joy when you walk into that room. If it doesn’t make you feel that way it's okay to let it go.

Day Ten: Vases

You made it to the last day! Today I want you to go through your flower vases. These tend to collect over the years and I encourage you to part with a few that you don’t love, use, or need. Once you’ve decluttered your vases, pick your favorite one and stick it on the counter. Now go buy yourself a beautiful bouquet to fill that vase and celebrate all the work you’ve done these last ten days!

Thank you for participating! I hope that you feel lighter and less overwhelmed after these ten days. If you want to keep going here is a list of other areas to declutter: cleaning supplies, personal care items, expired pantry items, kids toys, pet items, coats, shoes, cooking utensils.

If you are looking to have your home organized I am always happy to help, book a phone consult here and I’ll be in touch!
